Alan Ames Alexander, 83, a beloved family man and respected pediatrician with a lifelong passion for music passed away at his home on April 5, 2023.
Alan was born in 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Homer and Mariam (Tritt) Alexander. He grew up in East Cleveland, Ohio where he graduated from Shaw High School.
He attended Ohio Wesleyan University and received his medical doctor degree from The Ohio State University. Alan practiced pediatric medicine in the U.S. Navy; Lafayette, Indiana; Palm Desert, California and Keokuk, Iowa. He retired from practicing pediatrics after 50 years on his 80th birthday. He was a gifted pediatrician whose patients loved him.
While attending Ohio Wesleyan University he met and married his first wife, Joann Blocher. They later divorced. He married his wife of 48 years, Audrey Alexander, in 1974.
Alan had a lifelong love of music. While in high school, he played the trombone in the Shaw Rhythm Teens. He sang tenor in choruses both during his school years and throughout his lifetime. The Bach Chorale singers, the Lafayette Chamber Singers, California Desert Chorale, Sandblaster’s Chorus and Prairieland Barbershop Chorus were just a few of the chorus with whom he performed. Alan and Audrey enjoyed singing Christian duets in the churches they attended throughout their marriage. In his younger days, Alan loved to jog in his free time. He ran several marathons in his younger days.
Alan is survived by his wife, Audrey; sons, Daniel (Alex), David (Kim) and daughters Eve Rotterman (Michael) and Christie Ernst (Warren) and two step-sons, Bert Linson (Sabine) and Rick Williams (Tim). Grandchildren: Aaron Linson, David Linson, Tirzah Linson, Ben Alexander, Sam Alexander, Christy Ford, Jacob Linson, Christian Linson (Leah), Patrick Forte, Daina Forte (Sven), Zachary Collins, Andrew Collins, Connor Rotterman, Ellie Rotterman, Alexander Ernst, Brody Ernst; Brother, John (Sue) and sister-in law, Linda Alexander.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Mariam, and his father-in-law, Lloyd Kelly and mother in law, Harriet Kelly, brother, Chuck Alexander (Linda). Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and great grandchildren.
In his memory, the family will host a celebration of life on Saturday, May 13, 2023 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm. at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River Street, Madison, Ohio. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:30 pm.
