Thomas J. Zmecek, age 85, of Madison, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024 at Louis Stokes VA Medical Center. He was born September 26, 1938 in Painesville the son of Michael and Charlotte (Burr) Zmecek. Tom proudly served in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Riverside High School in 1956.
Tom spent his entire life lending a hand to others because he truly enjoyed people and trying to make a difference. In 2019 he was awarded the James Romanis Award by the Ohio VFW for outstanding service. He was a charter member of the Colonial Justice Chambers Marine Corp League and very active in their Toys for Tots program. Tom was also a favorite “Santa Claus” for many organizations and family events.
He is survived by his children, Guy (Pat) Williams, Lon (Kim) Williams, Lynn (Joe) Jackson, Lori (Paul) Guzzi, and Missy Sine; grandchildren, Katie, Michael, Candice (Tony), Joseph, Joshua (Samantha), Rakayla (Andrew), Sheila (Joe), Shannon, Christina, and Sara; 11 great grandchildren; his sister, Mary Lette and many extended family and friends for which Tom consistently bragged about. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Ann Zmecek; his parents; grandchildren, Faith and Andrew; and brother, Tim. The family would like to give special thanks to all who helped over the last few months and especially Hero’s Harbor Hospice for their loving care.
Friends will be received 5-8 pm Wed. May 29th at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River St., Madison. Funeral Service will be 11 am Thurs. May 30th at the Funeral Home with Military Honors. My condolences to the family.
Tom was a very dear close friend whom we have had several events together in our life some good and some not so good but we could laugh about it later. Tom would always enjoy talking with people whether he knew you or not. He also was always willing to help anyone and I mean anyone. He would give you the shirt off his back that what kind of a person he was. Very patriotic to the Marine Corps, country, family, and friends. Couldn’t ask for a better friend. I will miss him big time. Semper Fi brother!!!
What a wonderful tribute! Sounds like a man who truly made a difference in this world. I have seen his selflessness first hand at Zmecek family reunions. My sincere sympathy to family and friends. ❤️
I first became acquainted with the Zmecek name while attending St. Mary Grade School in Painesville with his brother. So I was aware there was an older brother named Tom.
I really got to know Tom when he and his wife would come to eat at my Chester Restaurant in the late 80s. And we really reconnected when I bought Hellriegel’s Inn in 1999 and Tom became a member of Hellriegel’s Veterans Pearl Harbor Day Committee.
He was an integral part of making the Pearl Harbor Day Remembrance Day Dinner happen every year. And of course I thoroughly enjoyed going to the Fairport VFW Friday Fish Frys organized by Tom, first to see and banter back and forth with Tom and second to enjoy his superbly done Perch dinners.
Tom was a thoroughly dedicated Veteran advocate.. Semper Fi, Tom
So sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. I met him when I joined VFW Post 7754 in 1977. He was a great guy to talk to and I enjoyed his company very much. Always a nice smile. Tom will be missed by many. Semper Fi old friend.
