Tammie Susan Deurlein, age 59 of Madison, was called home to be with her savior on Friday, March 17, 2017. Tammie was a graduate of Madison High School, class of 1975. She attended Heidelberg University and was a graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in education. She also obtained a Master of Education from John Carrol University in 1995. She spent her career in education, co-founding The Sunshine Place daycare and spending more than 20 years teaching Kindergarten through 8th grade within the Madison local school system. She had a life-long passion for teaching and leading, especially in early childhood education. She touched the lives of hundreds of children. She spent many summers working alongside her father on the family's plant nursery, D.E. Stallard and Daughters, becoming an expert in the propagation of plants by cuttings. She loved being in the company of family and friends, and had a unique ability to make anyone and everyone laugh. She could turn a perfect stranger into a new friend with her infectious laughter and smile. Tammie was an avid reader, writer of poetry, and accomplished flutist. She passed her love of music on to her sons. She was a lover of dogs and relished the companionship of her precious golden retriever, Maggie. She had a strong spiritual foundation and enjoyed Christian music and writing. She taught Sunday school and served as the director of the youth choir at Chapel United Methodist Church for many years. She also held leadership roles at Camp Koinonia Christian retreat. She is survived by her second husband, Gerald Atkin, sons Stephen and Michael Deurlein (LeighAnn Rodd) and grandsons Ezra and Silas Deurlein, who were the joy of her life. She is also survived by her sister Doris LeMoyne, and several beloved nieces and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, Don and Carol Stallard. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family is collecting funds to donate to a charitable cause. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. So sorry to hear about the passing of Tammie. I worked with Tammie in the Madison School system. What an inspiration and joy to be around. And the kids so loved her. Even now as I think about her, I can't help but smile. Take care of all those memories and may they help you with this process of loss.

  2. In Loving Memory of Tammy Went to school with Tammy and I will always remember how she made me laugh. She could take any growing older symptoms and turn them toward the light with laughs and jokes. Growing older around Tammy made it easier. Such a lovely soul and she will be missed in this world. Rest in peace and in our Lords loving arms Tammy. So sad you have left us. Forever in our hearts.

  3. Tammie, Doris Lee and I grew up together as my parents were great friends of Don and Carol. I was lucky enough to be counted as family for many years. I was blessed by knowing her, her sister and her parents and am truly taken aback by her passing. Prayers to her family and friends. I know she has a house in Heaven as the Lord has promised us. Tammie, please tell my sister, Maria I said hello.

  4. My parents started a nursery in the early 70's and as was commonly done at the time included their sons in the name. It was called C.M. Brown & Sons Nursery. They said they “started the nursery to keep the kids out of trouble” Shortly afterwords Don and Carol bought the property across the street to start a nursery of their own. He made a sign and planted directly across the street from ours. It read D.E. Stallard and Daughters. Don never missed a chance to get a good ribbing in over this. Both Don and Carol were no less proud of their Daughters Doris Lee and Tammie than anyone ever was of there sons. Being closer in age to Tammie I saw her many times thru the years. She had a great glowing smile and bubbly infectious laugh that I will always remember most. My thoughts and prayers go out to all her family for their loss.
