Richard Smegal
April 22, 1944 ~ August 31, 2022
Richard (Dick) L. Smegal Sr, age 78, passed away on August 31, 2022 at home surrounded by loved ones. He was born April 22, 1944 to Voletta (Lane) and Frank Smegal in Pierpont, Ohio.
He was a proud Vietnam Army veteran, a doorgunner with the 114th Air Mobile, receiving 13 air medals, 14th for valor, 1 presidential unit award, 1 expeditionary medal, and a Purple Heart.
A 20 year member of Carpenters Local 435, Dick was a hardworking carpenter, refurbishing and building structures throughout Ashtabula County and in Florida. He was multi-talented in all areas of construction and could fix anything and make it work. He was also a lineman for the Illuminating company for 13 years. He worked hard and played hard, was kind, generous, stubborn, and funny.
He was an avid angler in countless streams, but most loved the Allegheny Mountains to camp and trout fish. He also enjoyed casinos, traveling, target shooting, and just “Loved his blueberries!” He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; son, Eric Smegal; brother, Roger Smegal; sister in law, Dixie Smegal; and first wife Patricia Lockwood. He is survived by his love of 39 years, and caregiver, Sue Brady; his children, Richard Smegal Jr, Fort Myers, FL, Tammy Saunders (William Jr) Brunswick Hills, OH, Jeannette Smegal (Michael Hochschild) Geneva, OH; brother, Russell Smegal, St. James City, FL; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren, Kenneth Marsh and Vance Freeman who were like sons to him; and Sassy, his faithful Jack Russell.
The family would like to thank Traditions Hospice for all their TLC. Donations may be made to Ashtabula Feed Our Veterans as you wish. Upon Dicks request, Private Graveside Service with Military Honors will take place. Behm Family Funeral Home of Madison is assisting the family.
