rev. william alvey

November 22, 1939 ~ December 17, 2017

Reverend William Bill Alvey, 78, of Madison, passed away Sunday December 17, 2017 at the Lantern of Chagrin Valley, where he was serving as chaplain. Bill was born November 22, 1939 to William L. and Helen (Poole) Alvey in Steubenville, OH. Bill was drawn in by the Love of Christ and at the young age of 8, he knew he wanted to be a Pastor. His course of faith and giving led straight on from there. He studied at Capital Divinity School and became an ordained minister in the Methodist Church, serving at Northern Hills, Crooksville, New Port, Greenville (where he met his wife, Linda Kae, after she fell off the church roof!), Toledo, Middlefield, Ashtabula Harbor, Bulah Calvary, Chapel, and Park United Methodist Churches. But that wasnt enough for Rev. Bill…he gave not only to his congregations, but to his community. Bill was a Shriner and a Mason. He was a member of the Madison Historical Society and Eastern Star. Bill helped the Salvation Army and was a volunteer fireman in Crooksville. He even reached beyond the local community as a volunteer in Heifer International, a global nonprofit that works to eradicate poverty and hunger through sustainable, values-based holistic community development. Bill may say, Miss me, but let me go… as he would so often read from a favorite poem…. Rev. Bill is survived by his wife, Linda Kae; sons, William Edward (Dorothy) Alvey, Dennis Alvey, Timothy Alan Menger, Jamie Eugene (Shelly) Menger; 14 grandchildren; great grandchildren, Damian, Emma, Kylee; sister, Clara Lynn (Bill) Moran; and many loved nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents; grandson, Dylan Menger; and sister, Karen Montgomery. Friends may call from 3-7pm Wednesday December 27, 2017 at The Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River St. Madison OH 44057. Rev. John Germaine will preside for funeral service at 12pm Thursday December 28, 2017 at Cornerstone Friends Church, 2300 North Hubbard Rd. Madison OH 44057. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Reverend Alvey had a lifelong positive impact on me. He showed me that you can have fun and still be Christian. He saw to it that our youth group had so many different opportunities. I will remember him always.

  2. My father has “gone Yander”. I will miss and remember him as a good father! The past 30 years have been very hard not having him in my life. Everybody makes decisions and everyone makes mistakes.Ill always remember the first 19 years, and regret the past 30.My mom, brother, and niece will feel a loss here on earth, but heaven got a great storyteller!

  3. My friend Bill, I will miss you dearly. Your infectious smile and compassionate eyes will be missed by many of us in this community. I have enjoyed serving alongside you in ministry and look forward to the day I get heaven's most entertaining tour guide when I join you on the streets of gold!

  4. My prayers are with you Linda and your family. I know what you are feeling at this difficult time. Just know with the support of your family and friends you will be alright. God will give you the strength to get through this sad time.

  5. He officiated at my Mom's and Dad's funerals. He was in the middle of Mom's when he made a mistake about the name of one of our parks and I barked out the correct name to him. He turned and said, “Uh, um, whaaaat?” and I said, “The park was Township Park, not Stanton Park!” and he corrected himself, and I belted out, “You're fired!” I thought he was gonna have a heart attack! I figured that was the only time he had ever been fired right in the middle of a funeral before. Everybody laughed and it relieved the tensions of the services. I will always remember him as a guy who could take a joke.

  6. My thoughts are with Betty,Dennis,And Billy during this hard time! May the Bill Alvey we knew and loved be blessed and welcomed into the kingdom of God!

  7. My deepest condolences to you, Linda, and your entire family on the passing of Bill. I knew Bill from the first grade and he was always kind and thoughtful and took his religion seriously. I greatly admired these characteristics and understand that he has not changed during his entire life. He has served the Lord and Jesus well, and I am certain that he is with them now still praying for all whom he left behind. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to visit with him at our 60th High School Class reunion in September.

  8. I am writting on behalf of my Mom, William Alvey's only living sister. could his obituary be re-written with corrections made? His Father's name isn't William Lynn its William Leslie. he was also preceeded by his younger sister Karen Alvey Montgomery. he is also survived by his sister Claralynn Moran and 2 sons Billy and Dennis. Thankyou Robin Moran Robinson (neice)

  9. I remember when Rev. Bill and his wife Betty and there two kids Billy and Denny came to our church in Cincinnati, Northern Hills UMC. It was the 70s and things were changing so fast. Our daughter was killed in a concert that a group of the kids went to(Billy,Denny and numerous other kids from the youth group) Bill and Betty stayed up all night with us and thru the agonizeing days to follow! He was a great man with a big heart! I miss the whole family…Billy,Denny and of course Betty!God got a good one!
