John Stephen Nash, Sr.

John Stephen Nash, Sr. passed away December 20th. Old Honest John peacefully drifted away, as two of his grandsons, Will Nash and Dan Pelton, lovingly watched over and cared for him. His large and loving family surrounded him and stood by his side the days preceeding his passing. His ever faithful companion, Spike, never left his side. OHJ was born in Unionville, Ohio on December 31, 1922, to Ethel (Wilson) and Harry W. Nash. He had four siblings, Margaret, Harry, Mary and Katherine, who have all preceded him. Of his generation, he is survived by his brother in law, Steven Merkel (husband of Katherine) of Bay Village. John served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WW II. His tour of duty included Africa, India, the South Seas, and the United Kingdom. He was an active participant in D-day, in the invasion of Normandy. On August 16, 1947 he began a torrid love affair that would last 47 years, when he married his wife Ruth (Lohr). They had nine children, but sadly, lost their son Daniel at birth. They raised eight individuals, John Jr. (Ann Fowler), Edward (Deborah Prioreschi), Deborah (Richard) Reese, Andrew (Angie Hippely), George (Bev Boyd), Eva (James) Longar, Melissa (Doug) Parrish, and Ethel Nash. Of this large, loving bunch, Edward and Deborah (Byrde) Nash, and James Longar are deceased. John and Ruth also left behind 23 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and their first great great granddaughter. Their great grandson Eric Seitz is with them in Heaven. Old Honest John taught his family many real life lessons. Always show respect to the Flag, and to all who served. How to chop firewood, and build a fire. What many would consider a bad apple will make the best cider. Dont be afraid to use big words, but make sure you mean what you say. Confuse people on purpose sometimes, it makes them think about what you said. He taught how to plant, and harvest a garden, but more importantly, life will make you reap what you sow. Life is not fair, but thats no excuse to quit. Instead, find a song in your heart, and sing it. Loud and clear. The stars in the sky will shine a little brighter now, from the laughter he will bring. We dont know if the angels will let him add any of his songs to their repertoire, but they will surely let him join their chorus!
