Resided in: Madison, Ohio

James “Jim” Gandee, 79, of Madison, Ohio, passed away in his home on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. He was born on October 2, 1945 to Basil and Minnie Gandee in Ripley, West Virginia.

Jim worked as a deputy sheriff in Jackson County, West Virginia and then as a police officer in Madison, Ohio before taking a position at Parker Hannifin Corporation where he was employed as a supervisor for many years.

Jim was an amazing athlete in his younger days but enjoyed baseball more than any other sport. When he fractured his arm as a young teenager, he hid it from his coach and family, playing through the pain, just so he could finish the season! Jim continued playing baseball into his adult years but found his true passion when he decided to start coaching. He devoted many years to the youth in the community as the Braves’ head coach, taking his team to state in 1976. Although Jim enjoyed every season, his favorite was the year he was able to coach his grandson, Chad.

Jim was also an avid outdoorsman. One of his favorite pastimes was spending time with his family and friends at his hunting cabin in Tionesta, Pennsylvania, which he appropriately named Camp Six Pack as a tribute to his six children.

Above all else, Jim loved and cherished his wife and family as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, Gelorma Gandee; his children, Paul Gandee (Denise), Cynthia Gentile (Harry), Joseph Gandee, Kimberly Gandee (Jack), Shelly Wienhold (Chad), Mary Groudle (Michael); his grandchildren, Amy Curry (Adrian), Nicholas Gandee, Amanda Bosley (Donny), Joey Gandee, Tyler Peters, Chad Wienhold (Kaitlyn), Nicholas Kedacic (Chelsey), Ashley Groudle (Neil), Brad Wienhold (Skylar), Kevin Stewart (Natalie), Jesse Gandee, Justin Gandee (Alyssa), Travis Gandee, Joshua Groudle (Jadin), Caleb Groudle, and 7 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life with family and friends will be held at a later date.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. RIP father-in-law and coach. You will be missed by many! I’ll never forget our times together at Camp Six Pack. Beer and toasted cheese sandwiches while playing poker. I’ve known you since I was a kid and never thought that one day I would marry your daughter. Love ya, James

  2. I remember you, little Jimmy Gandee, when you lived on Stone Lick in a big white house on the hill. When we went to visit aunt Minnie and Basil, you were always busy playing outside with my little brother, Gary. My Mamaw, Lessie Walker Landis, and Minnie were sisters and you were first cousin to my father, Kemp Landis. May you and Gary now visit and enjoy each other again in heaven. Rest in peace our dear cousin. Love …Zelma

  3. You were like a second father to me growing up. Thank you for always being there. You’re so terribly missed ❤️

  4. RIP uncle jimmy. I know you’re up in heaven with my mama (ur sister) and my Jamie hugs and kisses for me. I miss them so much…. Spread you wings and fly high my dearest uncle. I love you. Your niece BJ

  5. So saddened by this news….

I was fortunate enough to play a small role on that ’76’ Little League team that went to state. It was the time of our lives. Coach Gandee was the perfect coach for that team. We could always count on him to make the right moves on the field. He treated us with respect and let us have fun.

Our condolences to the Gandee family. It is hard to lose a great man, especially when he is a father, grandfather and husband.

May you all find peace in this difficult time.
    Sincerely, Kevin & Annie Hooper

  6. Rest in peace, you were always a great friend and cousin-uncle to me and taught me alot. Our prayers and hearts go out the family….. Love you all. Thanks for all the memories, you are dearly missed and always will be.

  7. I first want to say my most sincere condolences to you Aunt Geri and all the kids. You have been in my thoughts and my prayers. You were blessed with a Great Husband and Father.

Uncle Jimmy was a great man and a Great Uncle. My memories of him bring a smile to my face. I’ve got a scar on my finger to remind me of when you and I were playing Cowboys and Indians when I was a youngster. As a kid, I remember sitting on your couch watching the “Braves” on TBS. I believe that started my love of the MLB. I remember deer hunting with you and Uncle Clem in WVA. At Chuckie’s funeral you grabbed my shoulder and gave me a reassuring squeeze, that meant so much. RIP Uncle.
