Gary McKenna

Gary McKenna, age 81, of Unionville, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at the Hospice of the Western Reserve in Medina. He was born in Bradner, Ohio, June 2, 1941, to Betty (Abel) and Donald McKenna. He married Beth Thornburg in Sparta, NC on May 13, 1961, and remained happily married for 55 years.
Gary met Beth at Waynesburg College, where they both earned their teaching degrees. His career started at Kirtland High School, teaching math and coaching wrestling. He later moved to Mentor High School and retired in 1993. Gary was an avid golfer and die-hard Tribe fan. He was a “ruthless” poker player, known for calling the cards prior to the flop, and enjoyed swapping stories while taking everyone’s pennies over a beer.
He is survived by his sons, Matthew (Vasilia) McKenna, David (Lori) McKenna; grandchildren, Aidan (Victoria), Ceili, Alexander and Aaron McKenna; sister, Kay (Frank) Murdocco; brother, Michael (Judy) McKenna. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Beth; parents, Betty and Donald; and brother, Patrick McKenna.
Friends will be received 1-2pm, Friday, May 5, 2023, at The Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River Street, Madison Ohio 44057. A Celebration of Life Service will follow immediately at 2pm. Final resting place will be Alexander Harper Cemetery in Unionville.
