Obituary for Dorothy L. Mavko
October 12, 1924—November 17, 2018
Dorothy Mavko, age 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family at Tidewell Hospice in Ellenton, Florida. She spent the majority of her life as a Midwesterner in Ohio. Raised in Unionville, Dorothy was the youngest of 11 children. As a spirited student, she led the Geneva High School band as head drum majorette and later attended Ohio University.
Dorothy married Jacob F. Mavko in 1948 and raised three children, Susan, Jake, and Mary Kim in Madison, OH. She was widowed in 1982 but remained in her home in Columbus, OH, until 2013 when she moved to San Francisco and later to Florida to be closer to family.
Dorothy showcased her flair for fashion as the owner of “Young at Heart,” a dress salon in Madison, OH, and later as a wedding consultant. Dorothy traveled extensively and greatly enjoyed her proofreading career at Diocesan Publications in Dublin, OH. Her long-time Columbus neighbors and friends will remember Dorothy as a friendly, hard-working, strong-willed woman with a great sense of humor.
In addition to her three children, Dorothy is survived by eight grandchildren—Danny, Lisa, Jennifer, Sarah, J. Paul, Madeline, Jacob and Taylor—with whom she was very close; five great grandchildren, Drew, Bree, Dylan, Landon and Hailey; daughter-in law Arlene; and sons–in law Dan Stump and Barry Schneider. They will remember Dorothy for her passion for cooking, her preparation of countless delicious family meals, and her artistic creativity. She made wonderful handicrafts, especially salt dough Christmas ornaments, was an avid reader, and also enjoyed gardening, oil painting, and playing blackjack. Her generous and loving spirit, mid-western values, and physical fortitude will live on in all our hearts and be remembered always.
A Catholic memorial mass will take place 2:00 pm on Friday, May 31, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Church, Madison, OH, with a one hour visitation prior to the service. Final Resting Place is North Madison Cemetery. For more information, please contact Behm Family Funeral Home of Madison.

I am sharing a favorite Prayer I found from Mom's desk: “MY FRIEND is one who speaks to me… And takes the time to write… Who has a thought to spare for me…Whatever day or night… Who comforts me and want to make My worry his concern… Who does a favor but expects… No favor in return… The one who knows the faults I have…But doesn't criticize… And who is always at my side…To help and sympathize…He is the brother of my soul…Forever good and kind…And he is first and foremost in…My grateful heart and mind…My friend is one who keeps me in … His every memory… And now and then will turn to God… And say a prayer for me.”
My Nani, Dorothy Mavko, was a very special gal. She always made me laugh, even when the times were tough. I like to believe I adopted her sense of humor-always witty and a little sarcastic. She had style and grace, even during her later years. I feel lucky to have spent quality time with her during her last months, around her birthday. She made me appreciate life and reminded me to always strive towards living! Rest in peace Nani, you will be loved.
I really like this prayer! Reminds me of all the letters Nani and I would write to each other. She was a reliable and fun pen pal who wrote pages of letters, numbered on the bottom corner to not lose track. My friend reminded me recently of how I also numbered my long winded letters to her. I guess it runs in the family. 🙂 Love you nani. We miss you.
Madeline, the picture of Nani in her “Worlds Best Nani “sweatshirt which we made for her, reminds me of all the visits to California that she made to visit us. She loved you three children and was there when you were born. She would cook for us, play with you kids, and loved being with you during those visits. It’s been a year since her death and I still miss and think of her every day.
