October 7, 1929 ~ July 5, 2021

Clarence E. Ashburn, age 91, of Roaming Shores passed away July 5, 2021 at UH Medical Center in Cleveland. Clarence spent his 91 years enjoying life. There wasn’t a joke told that he hadn’t heard, and loved sharing a joke or story when the opportunity presented itself. He loved being a Boy Scout leader, camping, fishing, hunting, feeding the birds and writing poetry and children’s stories. His artistic ability gave him a lifetime of enjoyment. He loved painting and in his later years, he painted crosses on small pieces of leather, which he freely gave to any smiling face. Clarence married his sweetheart neighbor Dorethea “Deets” Lawrence and together they raised four boys, Rodger, Bruce, Rick and Brad. Clarence and Deets were married 50 years until her passing in 2002. Clarence found love again and married Ann (Freed) on March 8, 2003. They enjoyed traveling which included cruises and a trip to Hawaii. Clarence is preceded in death by Dorethea (Lawrence) Ashburn; his son Rodger; daughter-in-law, Diane; his parents, Herbert Ashburn and Pearl (McCormick) Ashburn; sisters, Shirley and Faye Rose. Clarence is survived by his wife Ann (Freed) Ashburn; sons, Bruce, Rick (Rita) Ashburn, Brad (Debbie) Ashburn; and daughter-in-law Linda Ashburn, step-daughters, Alanya Bostwick, Claire Mahave; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Friends and family will be received from 5-8 pm on Monday, July 12, 2021 at Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River Street in Madison. Funeral Service will take place at 11 am on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at the funeral home. Final Resting place will be at Perry Cemetery. Guestbook

  1. I am sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Clarence at the Telegraph in Painesville. He always had a smile on his face and always brought a smile to my face. He was a great guy to work with. Please accept my prayers and Condolences to all.

  2. We love you grandpa. Soar high on your new adventures with grandma. You will be greatly missed. Love You Forever and Always.

  3. We've known Clarence from living in Roaming Shores and attending lots of dinners together. Clarence and Pat spent one whole dinner trading jokes (Clarence knew more jokes than Pat), and he was always helpful when I picked up Ann for LWV meetings. We also often biked in their direction to spend time looking at Clarence's lovely art, and their huge garden. Clarence will always be extra special to us and the world is less at his passing. Hugs to Ann and we miss her. Sally and Pat Flash
