  1. An extraordinary man whose true love for language and literature carried me through high school, Yale and years of University teaching.

  2. I agree w/ Heather – what Mr. Randall taught – in Sr. AP English and in Shakerite – became deeply ingrained in my pysche. I'm a better editor, writer and analyst because of him. He was not my favorite teacher, and I was certainly not his favorite student. We were both shocked when I got a 5 on the AP test. But he mattered, and honestly I think of him daily (no passive voice! no split infinitive!), as I read my way through life. How fabulous was Hamlet in 1 page her night essays? Beyond time to say thanks.

  3. Just one of a host of his grateful students. Burton Randall was a dedicated and talented teacher who expected a high level of achievement from his students. He was so caring and dedicated, we were motivated to deliver what he expected. When people reflect on the fine academic reputation Shaker Heights High School enjoys, I think the bricks and mortar that built the school's reputation was a few excellent teachers like Burton Randall. One of the best.

  4. I just learned of the passing of “Mr. Randall,” my Shaker High School English teacher. With continual writing assignments, he pushed us to write clearly and effectively. I credit him more than anyone else with making me a good writer. Being able to write well has brought me huge benefits to me over the years. I feel very much indebted to him.
