LaMar Chenault left a message on October 24, 2019:
Mel was my neighbor on Lewis Street and was part of the shenanigans that took place by all of us young boys growing up. I moved away in 1970 but got reacquainted him back during our 30 year reunion in 2002 when I played golf again at the Madison Country Club where I caddied and mowed greens as a boy. When I checked in to play I asked him if we could take a caddy and he said the caddies aren’t here anymore. I said “ what happened to them “ and he answered that “ they were too much trouble, so they got rid of them ! “ And of course I knew only too well what pranks we pulled as caddies and the things we did to the golfers and to each other. We even had a caddy stroke in 1968 and I think that might’ve had a negative affect on the club pro from Scotland , Peter McCombie. Not recognizing yet who I was he saw my name that I checked in with and cried out “ oh my gosh are you the LaMar Chenault that used to live on Lewis Street ? “ and we had a grand time reminiscing of wonderful times back in the day. You see I played golf and football too at Madison High School before my divorced mother stole me away to Alabama where she grew up at in 1970. Mel was one of the guys and after I moved away he obviously turned into quite a wonderful man. May his untimely death remind us all how quick life goes by and pursuade us to prepare for death and obtain forgiveness of sins ( none of us rambunctious boys in Madison had any problem recognizing that we were sinners ) by receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our savior and trusting in his finished work at the cross of Calvary to pay for our sins and save our soul. We only have to turn to the Lord Jesus Christ in repentance and faith and ask him to save our sinful souls. And he will because the Bible says as many as received Him to them gave He power to become the sons of God ( John 1:12 ) and for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved ( Romans 10:13 ). As The beautiful winter snow makes everything beautiful may it reminds us so is the soul that is washed in the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ beautiful to God Almighty!!! Isaiah 1:18 “ Come now and let us reason together saith the Lord; though your sins be as scarlet they shall be white as snow...”

I just heard about Mel today and am shocked by the news of him passing. Mel's time at Madison CC were some of the best times I ever had at the golf course. He was a huge asset to the course and I will think of Mel often and of fond memories. RIP good friend.

Mel was a great guy. I have many happy memories of spending time to him and his brother, Byron, while growing up in Madison. We attended countless wrestling matches, basketball and Indians games over the years. I particularly remember Mel driving a group of us to the Indians-Yankees game on the Bicentennial. We always had a lot of fun. Mel was a very good athete and possessed the exemplary Walker work ethic. I am pleased to learn that his sons inherited both traits. My heart goes out to the entire Walker family as they cope with this loss. Matt Sutch Simpsonville, SC

Mr. Walker always asked how I was doing and always knew how I had done in tournaments before I told him. He was always eager to show me the new pictures he had of his grandchildren and was so excited when he got to see them. I will miss seeing him when I'm at Madison...the course won't be the same without him.

We will miss Mel Walker as the Walker family was one of the first we met in 1972 when we moved to Madison Township. All the Walkers were a joy to know and Mel will not be forgotten. Robert and Alida Bending
