James Charles Weaver, 79, of Geneva, Ohio, went to be with the Lord at his home on March 20, 2024. He was born in Ashtabula, Ohio in 1944 to Berchard and Helen (Redmond) Weaver. Jim attended school in Geneva and Ashtabula before joining the US Navy.

Jim had many friends, especially his comrades at the Geneva VFW Post, where he was a member since 1971. He enjoyed having a cold one and sharing stories about his service with his comrades at the Post. He served in the US Navy from 1963 – 1971. He spent two tours in Vietnam aboard the USS Oriskany. He often shared stories of one of the most horrific times of his life, which was a large fire aboard the Oriskany. Sharing his stories seemed to help him heal.

Jim was an active member of Geneva VFW Post 6846, FOE, and American Legion. He devoted a lot of his time and energy to take care of the Geneva VFW Picnic Grounds located at 5301 New London Rd in Geneva, which is now known as the Geneva VFW Post 6846 “Jimmy Weaver” Park and Playground. Jim was the grounds keeper at the park from the moment it was opened over twenty years ago. He held many officer positions over the years at the VFW, his latest being a Trustee. He was forced to resign as trustee and give up his grounds keeper role in January 2024 due to his illness.

Jim was passionate about his role at AQUA water and the Ashtabula County Department of Environmental Services. With a combined over 30 years of service. It didn’t matter what time of day it was, if someone in his community had a water main break, he was there to assist.  It has been said that Jim knew where the majority of the water lines were in Ashtabula County.

Everyone who knew Jim knew how much he loved to shoot pool. He played for over 50 years, and played for different venues throughout the years such as North Center Tavern, Wings, and VFW Post 6846. Anyone who played him knew he was about to show them what “Weaver Pool” was, always blocking their next move.

Jim loved fishing, and was a football fan, especially of the Cleveland Browns (or anyone who was playing against the Steelers)!

He loved to dance and have a good time. He had some special moves we liked to call “The Weaver Dance”, no one could come close to his moves and the way he didn’t care who was watching when he danced to a good tune. Two of his favorite songs were Dream Weaver by Gary Wright, and Teen Angel by Mark Dinning.

Jim will always be remembered for his kind heart and willingness to help someone in need. He was the kind of man that would give you the shirt off of his back, even if he didn’t have another one.

We’ll always imagine hearing him say “we take care of our own” one more time. We couldn’t have asked for a better brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend and will miss Jim every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.

Jim loved with his whole heart and always looked at the positivity in things. He had a soft spot for his furry friends, treating each and every one like the valuable family member they were. He was preceded in death by his loving pups Lucy and Ginger, which he shared with his late wife Sandy.

Jim was widowed twice and preceded in death by his wife Sandra (Greenleaf) Weaver (2009), his wife Jessie (Broski) Weaver (2000), and also preceded in death by his parents Berchard and Helen Weaver, his brother Johnny Weaver, his son in law Gary Degenstein, and his great nephew Dylan Weaver.

He is survived by his daughter Dusty Degenstein of Spokane, Washington, his son Jason (Mary) Weaver of Monteagle, Tennessee, his son Todd Weaver of Manchester, Tennessee, his stepdaughter Debbie (Mitch) Cline of Geneva, Ohio, his brother Robert (Bobbie) Weaver of Ashtabula, his sister Nancy (Bob) Sintic of Ashtabula, and his brother David Weaver of Ashtabula. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Cody Norris, Kala Norris, Tyler Degenstein, Ashlee Weaver, Chris Summers, Kristin Lusk, Brianna Weaver, Jessie Weaver, Haley Clower, Todd Clower, Angie Alley, Catie Stancliff, Crystal Geer, and Bill Cline, 14 great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews (including great).

Calling hours will be held from 2pm – 4pm on April 11, 2024, followed by a service at 4pm, at the Behm Family Funeral Home, located at 175 S Broadway, Geneva, Ohio. A Memorial gathering will be held after services on April 11, 2024 at the “Jimmy Weaver” Park and Playground located at 5301 New London Road, Geneva, Ohio (weather permitting). If bad weather, then the gathering will take place at the Geneva VFW Post 6846 located at 76 Depot Street, Geneva, Ohio.
