Angela Close : The Golden Voice of British Rail who died in Geneva, Ohio on Tuesday 30^th January 2024, was born Angela Peberdy on July 30^th 1937 in Buckinghamshire, England. Angela was the daughter of Harry & Molly Peberdy.

A born adventurer, Angela moved to the shining lights of London during the swinging sixties where she pursued a successful career behind the microphone. Angela was the voice on the Southern Region English railway network in the 1970s – immortalised on The Members’ ‘Sound Of The Suburbs’ and gaining the moniker of The Golden Voice of British Rail.

Angela also worked in music management, notably at the illustrious De Lane Lea Studio’s in Dean Street, London. It was around this time that she met American businessman & artist Frederick J. Close whom she married too much fanfare in London’s West End.

Angela & Fred decided to settle in the small town of Madison in the late 1980s. When not globe-trotting, they worked together on many philanthropic projects helping with the Madison Food Center, the Friends of Stanton Park and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Cleveland.

Fred died in 2018 and shortly after Angela moved to The Sanctuary of Geneva, Ohio. Angela didn’t have children but is very fondly remembered by her nephews and nieces, Matthew, James, Claire & Celia and her many friends in both the UK and the USA such Rose Cowdrey, Gerri Podpadek, Jean Gower, and Fred’s daughters Kate Kislevitz and  Karen Close.
