Al Curtis, age 68 of Thompson passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 27, 2022. He was born in Cleveland on August 7, 1953 to Alfred and Hazel Curtis. He married Gail Vitolan on July 14, 1984 in Vermilion, Ohio.
Al is survived by his wife of 38 years, Gail; two children, Christopher (Katie) and Jennifer Curtis; he was the best papa to his three grandchildren, Grace, Jeff and Jackson. Al was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Wayne Curtis and Shannon Cassell.
Al graduate from Castle Heights Military School in Lebanon TN. He proudly served his country in the United States Army with 2 tours in Vietnam. Al retired from Aero Controlx in 2015 after 30 years. Al enjoyed building model helicopters, shooting targets, with his music on, drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette, all in the back yard on his lake. He was the proudest husband, dad and papa who loved spending time with his family.

Hi, Papa. It's me, Grace. I come on here often to constantly read your obituary and read the condolences from all these kind people. I cry so much thinking about you, because of how much you meant to all of us. I wish you only could have stayed longer, I got my cap and gown the following Friday you passed. I got my prom dress last Saturday and so did Maddie. We tried them on and I hope you saw us. Dalton and I are going to Prom together, and I hope you'll watch us dance our hearts away on that night. It's my last one. And this month is the last full month I have left of high school. I graduate in less than 50 days. I have to go now, its Accounting time. I love you so much, Papa. I miss you like crazy. Please watch over us. I wish you were here.

We met Al a few years ago at a mutual friends house. While sitting outside enjoying the sun and meeting new people a very quiet man sat down at the table with us. He didn’t have much to say (at first) but the longer we sat he started opening up. Now that I think about it, it might have had something to do with me bringing him a beer. Before we knew it we were sharing stories, laughing and enjoying this man’s company.
We didn’t know at that time just how special this man was or the impact he had on so many lives. His name was Al. As he put it, “Grace’s grandpa” as she hugged him.
