Karen Ruth Battes, age 76 of Madison, passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at UH Geneva Medical Center. She was born July 11, 1949 in Cleveland, the daughter of Walter and Ruth (Pokrant) Kraus.
Karen was a graduate of Ohio University and was a beloved Spanish teacher at Madison High School. She is a proud cancer survivor and she loved their dachshund, Mae.
She is survived by her son, John “Ed” Battes, stepchildren William “Bill” (Marge) Battes and Connie Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; stepson, Robert; and her parents.
Friends will be received from 4-7 pm on Monday, October 13th at Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River Street in Madison with a service to follow at 7 pm. A gofundme has been set up to help Ed with hospital and funeral expenses:

I will always remember Karen (aka Ms Battes) fondly, as my Spanish teacher who delighted in us, her students. She brought so much joy into her classroom and even as I grew older, followed my life with love and support. I’m grateful our lives intersected and for her light in the world. She will be missed.
Cousin Karen….. with you in South Euclid and us in Lyndhurst, we saw each other more than some of the other cousins.
