Frances Marie Mavko, age 85 of Marblehead, Massachusetts, passed away May 13, 2025. She was born November 25, 1939 in Painesville, OH the daughter of Valentine Mavko and Frances (Petrovic) Mavko. She grew up on the family farm in Madison, OH.
Fran was tech savvy and ahead of her time and worked for several major computer companies. A multifaceted woman with so many passions, creative talents like painting, photography, sewing, and the culinary arts. She had a great love for travel, especially a trip of a lifetime to Slovenia with her sister Anne, niece Karen and Karen’s husband Ed. One of her greatest joys was volunteering at Boston Children’s Hospital and Camp Sunshine in Maine. Fran loved talking to people and would strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, leading to lifelong friendships across the country. She was still in touch with her friend from the first grade! Fran was devoted to her Catholic faith and Slovenian heritage. She enjoyed time with family and friends, a glass of wine and of course a lot of laughter with her keen sense of humor.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her nephews, Robert (Barbara) Knaus, Dale (Kelli) Knaus, and Ed Jantzen; nieces, Kathy Sanders and Diane (Shane) Platt; also her special friend Renya Onasick and her family. Fran was preceded in death by her parents; her niece, Karen Jantzen and sister, Anne.

Though we worked together for only a few, short years in the late 1990s, our time together created a friendship full of laughter, love, and memories to last a lifetime. When our time as co-workers ended, you made me a scrapbook of emails that we had exchanged over those years that I still cherish. I think of our beloved Rudy (the “big dog” whom you grew to love and call your “boyfriend”); of mailing all those large letter packages with the crazy, crooked stamps at the mailboxes on Brattle Street and the man who had to mail one letter asking us “Do you mind if I play through?”; my mother’s “ee Moses!”; learning about Slovenia and the Slovenian language from you (“Havana Leaps” being the spell-checked version of “Hvala lepa”); the #10 sandwich from Hi-Rise Bakery; your encounter with “Swanee the painter”; our shared Catholic faith; and the list goes on. I will never forget your beautiful smile, expressive eyes, and wonderful sense of humor. I am so glad that God blessed us with each other. If anyone is in heaven now, it is you. Remember me to our beloved Lord, and rest in eternal joy!
Dearest Aunt Fran,
What a pleasure it was for me to know you! You were sooo before your time. Your nieces and nephews loved and admired you so much. I was proud to call you Aunt Fran even though I was just a friend to your loving nieces and nephews. I will always remember your ear to ear smile and how kindly you treated me! Enjoy it up there and save me a seat if you can! Love Katie Maloney
