Paul M. Barkley

paul barkley

Paul M. Barkley, 74, a man whose spirit was as strong as the steel he once shaped and as warm as the smile he wore so well, passed away suddenly, June 11, 2025. He was a devoted father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a friend to many.

Paul is survived by his beloved children, Kristine (Brian) Phipps, Paul (Sarah) Barkley, Jason (Misty) Stokes, Richard (Tonya) Stokes. He was blessed with 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him joy, pride, and purpose. And his loving sister, Barbara (Roger) Eich. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Cyril and Veronica Barkley, and his brothers, William and Timothy.

A hardworking man of many talents, Paul began his journey as a steel worker, building not only with his hands but with heart and integrity. In his later years, he found a second calling as an optician, helping people see the world more clearly—just as he always tried to do in life.

Paul was a passionate lover of music, especially the gritty, soul-shaking sounds of classic rock. Whether it was an Eric Clapton riff or a Molly Hatchet anthem, it was the soundtrack of his life.

An avid outdoorsman, Paul was a skilled white-tail deer hunter and a lifelong fisherman, passions rooted in his childhood along the banks of the St. Lawrence River. Nature was his peace, and the water was his home.

He also had a lifelong love affair with classic cars. From his cherished 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 to his most recent Corvette, Paul took great pride in the beauty, power, and history of the machines he drove.

Paul never met a stranger. He had a gift for connection—often found at a local bar sharing stories, a laugh, and a cold beer with a new friend. His infectious smile, easygoing nature, and love for life left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Though his chair now sits empty and the stories are left to be retold, Paul M. Barkley’s legacy lives on through his family, his friendships, and the memories made under open skies, beside still waters, and over clinking glasses.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Calling hours will be 4-6pm Friday, June 20, 2025 at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River Street, Madison Ohio 44057. A funeral service will immediately follow at 6pm.
